What Does PIP360° Measure?

The tool incorporates a scoring matrix respecting the key differences and pathways of each packaging type, i.e., not one score fits all approach for the following:

  • Recyclability (To note if the user is not sure the default is always recyclability)

  • Compostability (only when certified); and

  • Combination of recyclable and compostable packaging

The tool also measures GDR compliance, calculates GHG emissions and Canada EPR fees (average fee based on available provincial data).

The tool takes account of the following data:

  • 70 package distinct materials (and unit combinations) including 36 discrete plastics categories

  • Credit for recycled content within all materials, biobased plastics and for FSC certified fibres

  • Packaging intensity (product to package ratio)

  • Adjustments for use of non-recyclable fillers and barrier layers

Testimonials

“We have been searching for a tool to enable us to evaluate packaging beyond a typical LCA. The PIP360 tool allows us to measure not only differences in material inputs but it also gives a realistic view of the outcome for a package – recycling, composting or reusable, based on industry published data. This is a first of its kind tool that will help us drive important design decisions within our business.”

— Paul Yang, Director of Innovation and Sustainability, Tim Hortons

“PIP360° is a quick and concise way to score the sustainability of a package. In addition, it provides clear direction of how to improve that score.  By focusing on circularity, it complements the more detailed and time-consuming Life Cycle Analysis traditionally used to measure packaging sustainability.”

— Theo Boven Director of Product Development, Hood Packaging
